Submission to the local government and environment select committee on the Resource Legislation Amendment Bill
NZ Airports supports the stated intention of the Bill, which is to create a resource management system that achieves the sustainable management of natural and physical resources in an efficient and sustainable way. However, many of the proposed changes will not achieve the objectives of the reforms, or will have unintended consequences.
In particular, NZ Airports is deeply concerned that many of the proposed amendments will put at serious risk the operation and development of New Zealand's airports, by significantly liberalising the ability for residential development to locate near them. Airports are located in areas of New Zealand which are experiencing high levels of population growth, and reverse sensitivity effects on airports represents a major challenge in planning for this growth.
